Arthur Ashe Oral History Project Launches
Learn MoreThe Oral History project, led by Yolanda Hester and Chinyere Nwonye, is launched on two coasts, with interviews of Ashe friends and colleagues Donald Dell, Carole Dell, Larry Nagler, Ken Bentley, Buzzy Hettleman, and his high school tennis teammate Raymond Turner.
On October 30, 2019, friend and teammates Charlie Pasarell and Donald Dell shared stories about the impact of Arthur Ashe with students in African American Studies 19, Understanding the Second Half of the 20th Century Through the Life of Arthur Ashe.
Arthur Ashe Teammate Raymond Turner Visits UCLA Freshman Seminar
In early October of 2019, Raymond Turner, tennis teammate and Charles Sumner High School classmate, met with students in the freshman seminar on Understanding the Second Half of the Twentieth Century in the Life of Arthur Ashe. Turner not only shared stories about Ashe’s tennis prowess during his senior year of high school, but also offered his perspectives on the racial dynamics of St. Louis, Missouri and the opportunities and challenges they faced at the famous all-black high school. Charles “Charlie” Pasarell shared his recollections of his former roommate, tennis teammate, and friend, Arthur Ashe at the 2019 Fall Chancellor’s Society event at the Scripps Seaside Forum on September 12, 2019. John O’Dea, wearing the official 2018 USTA Arthur Ashe T-shirt, was one of many attendees eager to hear Pasarell’s stories of his beloved friend.
