Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Death of Arthur Ashe

With respect and reflection, the Arthur Ashe Legacy Project at UCLA notes the 30th anniversary of the death of Arthur Ashe on Feb 6, 1993.  Thirty years later, our understanding of his contributions to issues in athletics, social justice and global affairs are richer and more nuanced.

As the first black man to win multiple titles in the world of tennis, Ashe used his platform to advance numerous causes including providing college access to young people in both the US and Africa, and in his support of people impacted by the HIV/AIDS Crisis, and as a tireless advocate against oppression. Ashe’s imprint is wide and enduring.
